The National Agency of Drug and Food Control (NA-DFC) is a non departmental government institution based on Presidential Decree No. 166 in the year 2000 which is responsible directly to the President for its operation and build policy coordination with the Minister of Health and Social Welfare.

Permanent Secretariat coordinates strategic planning and organization, human resources development, financial management, legal advice and legislation, public relation and international cooperation, as well as public access to NA-DFC through Consumer Complaint Service Unit which serves and refers consumer inquiries in the field of drugs and food for follow up. Furthermore it coordinates the Centers in NA-DFC and all of its technical implementation units in Indonesia.

Deputy of Therapeutic Products and Narcotics, Psychotropic and Addictive Substance Control carries out pre-market evaluation on efficacy, safety and quality of drugs, biological products and medical devices in Indonesia as well as operates a clinical trial scheme followed by post-market control of therapeutic products, narcotics, psychotropic and addictive substance. It is also responsible for inspection on good manufacturing practices, production and distribution units, sampling, recalls, public warning and enforcement of regulation. The organization is supported by, among others, National Committee on Drug Evaluation, National Committee on Medical Devices Evaluation and Evaluation Committee on Promotion of Over the Counter Drugs, Traditional Medicines and Food Supplement.

Deputy of Traditional Medicines, Cosmetics and Complementary Product Control carries out pre-market evaluation and registration of traditional medicines, cosmetics and food supplement in Indonesia followed by post-market control of traditional medicines, cosmetics and complementary products, including its labeling and promotion. It is also responsible for inspection of good manufacturing practices, production and distribution units, sampling, recalls, public warning and enforcement of regulation. The organization is supported by, among others, National Committee on Traditional Medicines and National Committee on Cosmetic Evaluation.

Deputy of Food Safety and Hazardous Substance Control carries out pre and post-market evaluation of food safety, including inspection of production and distribution units, of food commodities, including its labeling and promotion, as well as hazardous product and substance control. Food producers and distributors are to implement Quality Assurance System, particularly good manufacturing practices, Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP), good distribution practices and Total Quality Management (TQM). It also conducts communication, information and education for consumers, surveillance of food and hazardous substances as well as management of food safety, hazardous product and substances. The organization is supported by, among others, National Committee on Food Product Evaluation.

National Laboratory of Drug and Food Control undertakes testing, test procedure development and quality assessment of therapeutic product, narcotics, psychotropic and addictive substances, medical devices, traditional medicines, cosmetics, complementary products, food and hazardous substances. Apart from being the top referral of 26 (twenty six) laboratories of drug and food control in Indonesia, it has been accredited by National Accreditation Committee, National Agency of Standardization in 1999, as well as WHO Collaborating Center since 1986 and member of International Certification Scheme. It is also supported by biotechnology laboratory, reference substance laboratory, laboratory of calibration and animal laboratory, as well as equipped by advanced laboratory facilities for physicochemistry analysis such as High Pressure Liquid Chromatography and Auto Samples, Gas Chromatography, Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer and Spectrophotometers; physical analysis such as Dissolution Tester Full Automatic and Smoking Machine; microbiological analysis as well as biological analysis.

Center of Drug and Food Investigation performs investigation of misconduct or attempt against the law related to therapeutic products, narcotics, psychotropic, addictive substances, traditional medicines, cosmetics, complementary products, food and other similar products.

Center of Drug and Food Research carries out activities on toxicology, food safety and therapeutic product researches.

Center of Drug and Food Information carries out information services on drug and food as well as poison center and coordinates NA-DFC's information technology activities.
